What is an ON-ON Switch?

Understanding Double Throw Toggle Switches

Definition & Function

An ON-ON switch, also known as a Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) switch, is a type of toggle switch that has two stable positions - both of which are "ON" positions. Unlike a standard ON-OFF switch, there is no "OFF" position in an ON-ON switch.

Key Characteristics:

  • Two stable operating positions
  • Single pole, double throw configuration
  • Always maintains circuit connection
  • Alternates between two different circuits

How It Works

1

Position 1 (ON)

Switch connects the common terminal to the first output terminal, completing circuit A.

Switching

When toggled, the switch breaks connection with circuit A and immediately connects to circuit B.

2

Position 2 (ON)

Switch connects the common terminal to the second output terminal, completing circuit B.

Common Applications

Fan Speed Control

Switching between high and low speed settings

Direction Control

Motor forward/reverse operation

Signal Routing

Audio/video input selection

Lighting Control

Switching between different light circuits

Power Source Selection

Alternating between main and backup power

Marine Applications

Bilge pump manual/automatic control

Terminal Configuration

Standard Wiring

  • Common Terminal: Input connection point
  • Terminal 1: First output circuit
  • Terminal 2: Second output circuit

Electrical Ratings

  • Voltage: Typically 125V-250V AC
  • Current: 10A-20A depending on model
  • Contact Type: Silver alloy contacts
